great video!.... I would add as the "gosth" cost of dawless: a good power strip: 40$; cables: 100-200$; midi cables: 30$... (not necessary but: midi devices) I would say headphones and/or speakers/monitors but its the same for daw option....

Hey @TeftyMeems or anyone else who has built this same slatwall project.. how much approximate space do ya end up between the various tiers/synths on a vertical plane? I realize depends on which slat you place the arms but I’m thinking of building this same 4x4 crownwall and concerned the controls on my synths will be inaccessible due to synth above it. Do ya end up with more space between tiers than say a jaspers 4,5, or 6 multi tiered stand? I realize each slat is 6”, so in theory with 4 tiers I would end up with 12” between each right? I’m trying to think which gives me more room between tiers… this slatwall project or a jaspers. I don’t mind ordering one but if slatwall gets me more space on a vertical tier level then I’ll go that route. Thx! Oh also where do you find the 4x4 dual 3” combo slatwall?

Thanks for this video, I'm actually looking to buy this tascam model 12 for my akai force, it seems that it's a nice mixer and quite alone to work with the Akai devices.

I'm considering my first MPC. Would you suggest the MPC Live 1 or the MPC One as an MPC newb. I've never had my hands on a MPC but currently use Logic, Maschine mk3, and a bit of hardware, and my mixer is the Model 12. I love my Maschine but really want to not be reliant on a computer. I think the Maschine Plus is way overpriced, especially considering that I can get an MPC Live or One for less £s than the Plus, and I'll still have my mk3 if I didn't get on with the MPC workflow. I currently have MIDI out of Maschine going to a MIDI through box, and MIDI out the box to TR8s, Ju06a, Sh01a, and also occasionally MIDI sync an RC202 looper to loop my Bass / Guitar in time with the hardware/software set up. Then audio just goes to the model 12 channels. I really want to be 'standalone' so an MPC is a better option than the Plus I reckon? Can anyone drop me any info on the pros and cons between MPC Live and MPC One, as a complete newb to MPC but with slight DAW / musical experience? Cheers

Hi. Noob question. You mentioned you were using a patch bay to route audio. I’ve got the auto channel working but want to know my options for the audio. Ideally I’d like to use this as a performance tool using ezbots template and I’m also wanting to record the live set. I assume all the audio needs to get through the oktatrak for this to work properly. Have you any vids on your setup? I seem to remember you showing a Mackie board and I’m keen to know more. I potentially want to include acoustic and electric guitar along with vocals. Trying to get my head around this is tough

Heres the thing, no I wouldnt really use the onboard sounds (except some of the hip hop drums are really good) i dont think it was even designed for that, this defeats having to buy a keyboard to noodle around with (and drum pad) and then buy a separate midi controller. I use it for midi controlling in my daw and producing, and then after a long day, i sit on my bed and noodle around with it and come up with ideas to implement later in the daw with the sounds I really want to use. Plus, using my regular midi controller on the go with my phone. I cant use the drum pad and keyboard at the same time, with this you can. I think its a great two in one. For two separate things.

Yes your right probability would be a good feature, I would like to be able to set the arpeggiator on random and leave it to evolve over time. Anyway back to what I wanted to say, Really excellent review, and thanks for sharing.

I started “dawless“ with machine+ and a bunch of analogue and digital synths. But you can only go "that" far in a fullblown production with hardware. Got FL studio and a bunch of really nice soft synths like pigments, serum, Dune 2 etc and sold almost all my synths because the softsynths sounded better . Atleast against the digital hardware synths like the virus i had etc. But.. i missed the tactile in the moment things you can do with hardware synths and especially running two parameters at the same time. So now ingace a dedicated production station with a massive stationary computer. And i have a live hybrid jamming station with a lot of boxes like Taiga, TR8S, Model d, microfreak, ju06a and a laptop loaded with the best softsynths there is. OXI One controlls them all and i have a korg nano controller that i assign parameters from the softsynths like cutoff/resonance etc to and also use as a mixer for all software. And i record only from.the mastertrack only. When i want to go fullblown production its just an usb away... Really happy with my current setup as its best of both. Wouldnt want to go strictly dawless or only Daw...

Macs are more stable, have better performance (Apple Silicon), are almost silent (!), have lower latency... no PC currently comes close. I have been using PCs in the studio for 30 years and there have almost always been problems... including what you mentioned with sharing midi ports, but also audio driver crashes where often only a reboot of the PC helps. You can work well with a PC, but compared to a Mac, Macs are much better. When I think of my noisy Windows 10 computer compared to my inaudible and powerful Mac... it's like night and day... so my recommendation is clear: Mac for music production! A Mac Mini will do just fine...

I really enjoyed the video. Good thinking. So now I’m torn on whether to grab a jaspers 4d-145B 4 tiered stand and add an extra set of arms and just place a wooden board flat on one of the tiers for all my smaller synths/effects/mixer. Looks like shipped i can grab this all for around $350. I was curious how wide you can go with this slat kit from amazon? I have a couple full sized synths. Anyways great setup and now you have me thinking! Cheers!

Coreaudio Sounds much like Pipewire in linux, but coreaudio obviosly are more stable as of now. Long for the day when alsa and pipewire outperforms asio..

Amazing video, thank you. To fix the program change problem - all the devices need to be on the same auto channel. This can clearly run into some issues, and I've only found this to work well with my two boxes, no clue how you would do this with the setup in the video.

Okay guys I need some advice: I have a lot of outboard gear (drummachines and synts) Should I first get the MPC one, or the Tascam 12? I have a Synthstrom Deluge, but I need some more in depth control. Hence the journey for a different workflow.

I finally decided to look into this topic and when I saw the search results, I instinctively chose your video first because I can always trust your input to be fair and nuanced.

Turning up the main fader to increase studio monitor volume causes internal distortion. How do you turn up the volume on your studio monitors without turning up the main faders.

DAWs are for composing and mixing. Not really set up that well for jamming.
